Introducing Trific, a future-proof packaging solution featuring Yangi’s dry forming technology
Trific is a unique 48-hour travel kit that has been developed through collaboration from partners across the entire packaging value chain who are committed to developing future-proof solutions, inviting brands to explore their current packaging portfolio to replace them with more sustainable alternatives.
In a circular economy, it is our shared obligation to design out packaging waste, giving consumers more sustainable options to choose from. The Trific project is a perfect example of what can be achieved when partners across the entire packaging value chain are willing to explore and be a part of pioneering new packaging solutions, together.
The Trific project is a collaboration between four companies: Holmen Iggesund, a premium paperboard company, Yangi, the pioneers in dry forming technology, Optima Packaging Group, a world leader in dosing, filling, and packaging technologies and FutureLab & Partners, an accelerator of new sustainable and circular technologies. The project aims to speed up the commercialisation of dry forming technology by introducing new sustainable premium packaging solutions for the health, body, and beauty industry.
The Trific concept was designed with circularity in mind, where nothing is wasted. The Trific prototype is a bio-based 48-hour travel kit for people who travel responsibly and well. It embodies three elements of modern travel packaging: renewable materials, low-energy manufacturing, and, user experience. It represents three modes of travel: by air, water, or land. It contains three dry products that dissolve after use: tooth, hand, and shower tablets. The package itself and the sleeve are made from 100% biodegradable and renewable solutions that fit into existing recyclable systems.
It begins in the forest. The fibers used for Trific come from sustainably managed forests surrounding Holmen Iggesund. The leftover from the harvested wood is used for renewable raw material that the Trific concept is made from.
Yangi, then takes over by transforming the natural wood fibres into formable packaging. Designed to meet circular principles, Yangi is a manufacturing technology for dry formed cellulose-based packaging.
“Through our ground-breaking dry forming technology, we are pioneering the next generation of fibre-based solutions and reshaping the world of packaging,” says Anna Altner, Founder, Yangi. “We can produce 3D-formed packaging directly from cellulose pulp in one machine line at a 30% lower cost than existing fibre-based solutions, with no water and less energy use, resulting in a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions.”
Once formed, Trific is then passed on to German Optima Packaging Group. The innovative barrier solution they have developed enables the package to be airtight, ensuring there is no leakage during transit.
FutureLab & Partners, the fourth company in the Trific collaboration are the designers behind the Triffic concept and facilitated the collaboration. “The ability of design to synthesise the essence of what technology can offer and what the user needs is embodied in the ability to visualise and prototype,” says Liselotte Tingvall, CEO FutureLab & Partners. “I believe that “Yangi’s dry forming process is one of the most promising emerging technologies for the future of sustainable packaging.”
“Dry forming technology has the potential of replacing rigid plastic at scale and is increasingly becoming a viable solution for brands and packaging manufacturers to explore.” says Johann Kaiser, CEO of Yangi.
We invite premium brands who are looking for packaging alternatives to their current product portfolio to reach out to us to explore, collaborate, and innovate.
